Course Organization

This course has two major sections. The first four lessons introduce you to the scientific method and the formation of scientific theories. Specifically, we’ll look at the historic observations and experiments that led to the development of the atomic theory. The atom itself is the basis of all chemistry. The midterm exam tests you on this material.

The last four lessons introduce you to additional observations and experiments that led to the theories chemists use to explain the various interactions of matter, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. You will learn about the chemistry involved in searching for alternative energy sources. The final exam primarily covers material from the last half of the course, however, topics covered in lessons 1–4 may appear on the final.
